Description
Abstract: Emissions from plants of chemical process industry (CPI) not only waste raw materials and energy that could produce valuable products but also pollute the ambient atmospheric environment and harm local communities. Thus, cost-effective emission reduction solutions can bring triple-win benefits to industries, local communities, and governmental environmental agencies. In this talk, research achievements from Dr. Xu’s group on cost-effective emission reduction solutions for typical chemical industry complexes and their environmental impacts will be introduced. The talk will first introduce emission source reduction studies under normal operation conditions, employing conceptual design, process modeling, system integration, and economic and environmental impact analysis. Case studies of a new natural gas-powered chemical complex that simultaneously produces electricity, water, chemicals, and liquefied natural gas (LNG) with near-zero emissions will be demonstrated. Next, this talk will present cost-effective flare minimization solutions for abnormal operation conditions in chemical complexes, such as plant startups, shutdowns, and upsets. Systematic methodologies involving process design, control, dynamic modeling and simulation, and production scheduling for flare minimization will be introduced with multiple case studies. Short Bio: Dr. Qiang Xu is the Full Professor of Dan F. Smith Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas. His main research areas include process synthesis, production scheduling, dynamic simulation and optimization with applications in emission reduction, energy saving, process safety, and regional air-quality analysis associated with chemical/petrochemical/midstream industries. He has published 177 peer-reviewed papers and given over 330 invited talks and conference presentations. He is the recipient of 2016 Excellence in Process Development Research Award from Process Development....
